アニエスベー ギャラリー ブティックは、5月30日(土)から7月31日(金)まで、クレイグ・コステロ(KR)による個展『Thank you for letting me be myself again.』を開催いたします。

クレイグ・コステロは、2018年に来日した際、アニエスベー渋谷店のファサード一面に作品を制作。その作品は今でも渋谷のストリートシーンのアイコンとして親しまれています。今回は3年ぶりの来日となり、本展では新作シリーズを発表します。展覧会タイトルは、長年にわたり数多くのミュージシャンに引用されてきた楽曲のタイトルから着想を得ています。なかでもクレイグが強く惹かれたのは、"again"という言葉が持つ力です。「自分らしくあること」の大切さを改めて問いかけるこの言葉は、彼自身の創作姿勢と深く共鳴しており、本展全体を貫くメッセージとなっています。

6月8日までPARCO MUSEUM TOKYOで開催中の『agnès b. on aime le graff!!_50年、ストリートとともに』では、アニエスベー所蔵のクレイグの大型キャンバス作品が展示されていますので、あわせてお楽しみください。


アーティストステートメント
クレイグ・コステロが本展で発表する新作シリーズ《Thank you for letting me be myself again》は、紙を支持体とし、アクリルとエナメルが幾重にも積み重ねられた作品群である。絵の具の堆積は紙そのものの厚みを凌駕するほどに達し、その表面にはすべての過程が刻印されている——粗く、累積し、剥ぎ取られ、まるで地下鉄の壁面から引き剥がされてきたかのように。コステロは絵の具を意図的に制御しながらも、同時にそれを解放する。重力に従い落下し流れゆく物質の運動に委ね、降り注ぐ水、炸裂する花火、あるいは天体の運行を想起させるイメージを生成する。
本作はスタディ(習作)であると同時に、それ自体として完結した自律的オブジェクトでもある。より大規模な絵画に向けた思考の痕跡を内包しながら、ドローイングとして独立した存在感を持って完全に成立している。


Artist Profile
クレイグ・コステロ(KRとしても知られる)は、ニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティストであり、その分野横断的な実践は、絵画、サイトスペシフィック・インスタレーション、写真に及びます。クリエイティブ・ディレクターとして、自身の制作活動とともに、画材ブランド兼クリエイティブ・スタジオであるKRINKのビジュアルやコンセプト全体も手がけています。

実験と革新はコステロの制作の核であり、消火器や園芸用スプレー、靴墨ボトルといった意外な道具を用いて、アートの枠組みを拡張してきました。これらのツールは彼の手の一部のように機能し、多様なスケールとコントロールで独自の痕跡を生み出しています。

DIY的精神は、1980年代のニューヨークにおけるグラフィティ・ライター、スケーター、パンクといった活気あるサブカルチャーに浸っていた彼の形成期にそのルーツを持ちます。コステロはまた、型破りなツールにとどまらず、建物の頂上からトンネルの奥深くに至るまで、新たなキャンバスを常に探し求めてきました。彼の作品は、建築、スケール、反復の探求となり、都市空間の中でその痕跡が視認されるよう、緻密に設計されています。制作は周囲の環境から強い影響を受けており、その環境自体が創作プロセスにおいて不可欠かつ絶えず変化する要素となっています。

現在、コステロは積極的にグラフィティを行ってはいないものの、それは依然として彼の作品において重要な役割を果たしています。サンフランシスコでの正式な美術教育の過程で、写真やコンセプチュアル・アートにも取り組むようになりました。この実践は彼のグラフィティのルーツと自然に結びつき、従来のタグから、よりミニマルでジェスチャー性の高い痕跡やドリップへと移行していきました。グラフィティにおいてスタイルは個性の表現手段であり、しばしば非グラフィティの人々には判読できません。コステロはこの「可読性」の概念に着目し、文字の操作を通して抽象的な形態を生み出しています。

彼の制作の中心は絵画であり、特に大判作品やサイトスペシフィック・インスタレーションに重点が置かれています。これにより、グラフィティの持つ一過性を超え、キャンバスや壁面が持つ持続性を取り込むことが可能となっています。コステロの絵画は、形態的な表現や素材の物質性、さらには過剰性を探求しています。そこから生まれる形態は、伝統的なフォルムを想起させつつ、動きの感覚を帯びています。彼の作品は、制御と制御不能のあいだの繊細な相互作用を捉えており、流し込み、スプレー、ドリップといった技法を用いることで、即興性や流動性を喚起します。彼のジェスチャーや動きは意図的でありながら、同時に絵具やインクが自律的に振る舞い、自由に飛散し滴り落ちることを許しています。その結果として予測不可能な形態が生まれます。この精密さと不完全性の受容の並置こそが、彼の重要な探求のひとつとなっています。

コステロは、パレ・ド・トーキョー、V1、ダイチ・プロジェクトなど世界的に著名なギャラリーや美術館で展示を行ってきました。彼のインスタレーションは、東京、パリ、ソウル、ローマ、ロンドンといった都市でも展開されています。また、Nike、Tiffany & Co.、Virgil Abloh、Tommy Hilfigerといったクリエイターや著名ブランドとのコラボレーションも行っています。

agnès b. galerie boutique is pleased to present Thank you for letting me be myself again., a solo exhibition by Craig KR Costello, running from Saturday 30th May to Friday 31st July 2026.

During his visit to Japan in 2018, Craig Costello created a large-scale work across the entire façade of the agnès b. Shibuya boutique — a piece that has since become an enduring icon of the Shibuya street scene. Returning to Japan for the first time in three years, Costello will present a new series of works in this exhibition. The exhibition title is drawn from a song that has been referenced by numerous musicians over the years. It is the word "again" that resonates most deeply with Craig — a word that invites us to reflect on the importance of being true to oneself. This message lies at the very heart of his creative practice and runs throughout the exhibition as a whole.

agnès b. on aime le graff!! — 50 Years with the Street, currently on view at PARCO MUSEUM TOKYO until 8th June, features canvas works from the agnès b. collection. We warmly invite you to enjoy both exhibitions.


Artist Statement
Craig Costello presents Thank you for letting me be myself again, a new series of painted works on paper. Acrylic and enamel are layered until the paint is thicker than the paper itself. The surface holds a history—rough, built up, peeled back—as if pulled from a subway wall. Costello deliberately guides the paint and then releases it, allowing it to fall and flow. Falling water, fireworks, and celestial bodies come to mind. These works are both studies and objects in their own right: drawings that hold ideas for larger paintings while standing fully on their own.


Artist Profile
Craig Costello, also known as KR, is a New York City based artist whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses painting, site-specific installations, and photography. As a creative director, he shapes all visual and conceptual ideas for his artistic endeavors and company, Krink, an artist materials brand and creative studio.

Experimentation and innovation are the cornerstones of Costello’s approach. He pushes the boundaries of traditional art by repurposing and modifying unexpected objects, such as fire extinguishers, garden sprayers, and shoe polish bottles. These unconventional tools have become extensions of his hand, enabling him to manipulate his medium and create unique marks of varying scales and degrees of control.

This DIY ethos finds its roots in Costello’s formative years, immersed in the vibrant subculture of graffiti writers, skaters, and punks in 1980s NYC. Beyond unconventional tools, Costello continually sought new canvases, from the summits of buildings to the depths of tunnels. His art became an exploration of architecture, scale, and repetition, all meticulously designed to ensure that his marks were seen throughout the urban landscape. His work is profoundly rooted in the influence of his surroundings, with the environment serving as an indispensable and ever-evolving facet of his creative process.

While Costello no longer actively participates in graffiti, it continues to play an integral role in his work. During his formal art education in San Francisco, Costello began to delve into photography and conceptual art. This practice seamlessly intertwined with his graffiti roots, culminating in a transition from traditional graffiti tags to minimalist, gestural marks and drips. In graffiti, style is used to express individuality and is often illegible to non-graffiti writers. Costello draws upon this concept of legibility and explores the manipulation of letters to create abstract shapes and forms.

Painting is a primary focus, particularly large-format works and site-specific installations. This allows him to transcend the ephemeral nature of graffiti and embrace the enduring qualities of canvas and walls. Costello’s paintings explore formal representations and the materiality and excess of his mediums. The resulting forms, reminiscent of traditional shapes, exude a sense of motion. His work captures the delicate interplay between control and the uncontrollable, as he employs techniques like pouring, spraying, and dripping to evoke spontaneity and fluidity. While his gestures and movements are deliberate, he also allows the paint and ink to take on a life of their own, freely splattering and dripping, ultimately giving rise to forms that are unpredictable. This juxtaposition of precision and Costello’s embrace of imperfection continues to be a significant exploration.

Costello has exhibited in renowned galleries and museums worldwide, including Palais De Tokyo, V1, Deitch Projects, and the Museum of Contemporary Art. His installations have made an impact in cities like Tokyo, Paris, Seoul, Rome, and London. He has also collaborated with creatives and well-known brands such as Nike, Tiffany & Co, Virgil Abloh, and Tommy Hilfiger.
